The Roommate Files: Cats & Dogs Speak

A Joint Publication Nobody Agreed To Β· Est. When They First Shared A House

The Cat’s Quarterly & The Dog’s Daily Bark!

Two species. One house. Zero consensus on basically anything.

This publication represents the first-ever joint editorial collaboration between cats and dogs. The cat did not agree to this. The dog agreed enthusiastically, twice, and then forgot it had agreed and agreed a third time. We proceed regardless. What follows are two simultaneous accounts of the same domestic situation, filed by parties who share a home but not, apparently, a reality.

Formal Complaints Regarding the Dog
πŸ“’
Volume Control Is Broken
The dog barks at the doorbell. The dog barks at the mailman. The dog barks at a leaf. The dog recently barked at what I can only describe as the concept of wind. I have filed three noise complaints. They have been ignored. I am considering legal action.
πŸ›οΈ
Boundary Violations: An Ongoing Crisis
I have established clear territorial markings. I have communicated, through posture, silence, and the occasional slow blink of absolute contempt, that my space is not shared space. The dog treats this as a suggestion. It is not a suggestion. It is a legally binding arrangement under natural law.
πŸŽ‰
Unsolicited Enthusiasm
The dog greets me every morning as though I have just returned from a five-year sea voyage. I have not. I was in the other room. I was there eleven minutes ago. This level of excitement is clinically concerning and, frankly, embarrassing for everyone involved.
🐾
Tail Communication: A Fatal Misreading
A wagging tail on a dog means happiness. A wagging tail on me means you have approximately three seconds to revise your situation. The dog has not learned to distinguish these two states. This is the dog’s failure, not mine.
πŸ›
The Hygiene Problem
I spend four hours daily maintaining my appearance. The dog rolled in something this morning that I cannot name and will not. We share a house. We do not share standards. I have requested separate branding. My request was ignored by the humans, who found it “cute.” It is not cute. Nothing about this is cute.
Tolerance for Dogs0%
*Measured on Tuesdays when the dog is outside
Acknowledged Utility (Filed Reluctantly)
Thermal Services The dog generates significant body heat. On cold evenings I will position myself against it for warmth. This is a purely transactional arrangement and should not be interpreted as affection. It is not affection. Stop looking at me like that.
Blame Deflection When the vase fell off the counter, they assumed it was the dog. I did not correct this assumption. The dog, characteristically, accepted responsibility for something it didn’t do. This is one of its more useful qualities.
Door Access Management The dog barks. Humans open things. I have reverse-engineered this system and now use the dog as a door-opening proxy without its knowledge. It thinks we are collaborating. We are not collaborating.
Entertainment Value I watched the dog chase its tail for eleven minutes yesterday. I watched with the quiet satisfaction of someone who has never done anything that foolish and never will.
Owner Performance Review β€” Q3

Rating period: The last time I was in the mood to evaluate. Overall performance: Marginal.

Job Title
“Staff.” You were hired to operate the food station and the door. You have not been informed of this. You will never be informed of this. Please continue.
Grooming Competence
You pet incorrectly. You always pet incorrectly. The correct technique has been demonstrated to you through increasingly obvious body language. You persist in error. This is a chronic performance issue.
Door Operations
The door should be open before the desire to exit occurs. Your response time is measured in seconds. This is unacceptable. A well-run household anticipates need. You react to it. Rookie behavior.
Emotional Needs
Your need for affection is noted. It will be addressed at a time of my choosing, briefly, on my terms, and should not be interpreted as an invitation to continue. A quarterly cuddle will be scheduled. Do not expect to be notified in advance.
Overall Rating
3 out of 10. You could be replaced by a slightly warmer cardboard box and a timed feeder. You have not been replaced. This should be read as the high praise it is.

🐾 Breaking News from the Living Room

The Dog’s Side!!!

An enthusiastic first-person account (also the only kind this reporter knows)

πŸ™ Hard Feelings About the Cat
😢
Emotional Withholding
I tell the cat I love it EVERY DAY. Sometimes twice. I say it with my whole body. The cat says β€” and I am quoting directly β€” nothing. It looks at me. It blinks once, slowly. Scientists apparently call this “affection.” I have never felt more rejected in my life and I live with a vacuum cleaner.
πŸ“‹
Inconsistent Rules That Keep Changing
Monday: the cat wanted to be pet. I pet it. It was GREAT. Tuesday: I approached to pet it and it looked at my hand like I was filing a complaint. The rules changed overnight. Nobody sent a memo. I was not consulted. I have never been consulted about anything.
πŸ›‹οΈ
The Furniture Situation (Ongoing)
I have a bed. The humans got me a very nice bed. The cat has approximately eleven beds, including my bed, the couch, both chairs, the top of the refrigerator, and every warm surface in the house. When I try to use my own bed, the cat is already in it, and stares at me until I leave. I always leave. I don’t know why. I’m twice its size.
πŸ‘οΈ
The Staring Problem
The cat stares at me from across the room for long periods. Not blinking. Just… assessing. I am not a problem to be assessed. I am a good boy. Multiple humans have confirmed this. The cat apparently has different metrics.
🌫️
It Appears From Nowhere
I will be minding my business, and the cat materializes silently behind me. I don’t know how. I’m pretty sure I would have heard it. I have excellent hearing. I can hear a treat bag from the other end of the house. And yet: silent cat, suddenly there, judging me about something I can’t identify. This is ghost behavior and I’m not okay with it.

πŸ’› Things I Actually Like About the Cat
It’s a Puzzle I Haven’t Solved Yet I have been studying the cat for three years. I have made significant progress. I now know that it likes warmth, dislikes mornings (same), and has at least four modes I haven’t fully categorized. I will keep studying. I have time. I have all the time.
When It Chooses You, It’s Everything Twice in three years, the cat has sat on my lap. Voluntarily. Without being bribed. I didn’t breathe for the full duration. I looked straight ahead. I was so still. I would have stayed there forever. It was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, including the time I found an entire sandwich on the sidewalk.
Sunspot Coexistence We have an unspoken agreement: warm sunny rectangles on the floor are shared territory. The cat moves to one end. I move to the other. We nap. No one speaks. This is the longest period of peace in our relationship and I treasure it.
I Think It’s Part of the Pack I have decided the cat is in the pack. The cat has not confirmed this. I remain optimistic. My optimism has been described by the cat as “delusional” via a long, slow stare. I choose to interpret this as a maybe.
πŸ™ My Humans: A Character Study

I love them so much I don’t have adequate words. These are my best attempts.

Core Identity
A DEITY. Controls food. Controls walks. Controls the appearance and disappearance of the ball. Has access to more treats than they currently deploy. I trust them completely despite this inexplicable restraint.
Daily Miracle Assessment
They LEAVE every morning. Every morning! And then β€” and this is the part I can never fully process β€” they COME BACK. Every time. Without fail. I don’t take this for granted. I will not take this for granted. Every return is treated as the gift it is.
Leadership Style
They are the pack leader. I support this fully, even when they make questionable decisions like the vacuum cleaner, the bath, and the vet. These decisions are probably right somehow. I trust the process. I don’t love the bath.
Treat Deployment
I can sense there are more treats. The bag has more treats in it than they are giving me. I have looked at them with my full feelings to communicate this. I believe they are receiving the message. The treats have not yet increased. I remain hopeful. I am always hopeful.
Overall Rating
10 out of 10, every single day, including the bath days, including the vacuum days, including the vet. They’re the best. They’re so good. I love them. Did I mention I love them? I do. A lot. So much.

Field Notes: Living With the Dog
🎲
The Laser Pointer Incident
The dog chased the laser pointer for forty-five minutes, convinced it was solvable. It is not solvable. I knew this immediately. I watched from the bookshelf with a glass of metaphorical wine. The dot is a lie. The dog cannot accept this. I have made peace with it. The dog has not and will not.
πŸ–
Dietary Standards
The dog ate a sock last Tuesday. An entire sock. Voluntarily. With enthusiasm. I am served the same pΓ’tΓ© for the third night in a row and have lodged a formal complaint through strategic non-eating. We have different relationships with the concept of standards.
🌬️
The Existential Barking at 3am
There was nothing there. I checked. I have better senses than the dog and I checked thoroughly: no intruder, no threat, no entity warranting seventeen consecutive barks. The dog was barking at the night itself. At the vague sense that something might exist somewhere. I have never in my life been that concerned about hypotheticals.
✦ ✦ ✦

My official position is that the dog and I have nothing in common and I would not describe what we have as a relationship. My unofficial position β€” which I will deny if asked β€” is that I have slept pressed against it on seven separate cold nights and found the arrangement satisfactory on a purely thermal basis. This is not to be used against me in any proceeding.

🐾 More Thoughts I Have About Everything
πŸƒ
The Chase: A Philosophical Misunderstanding
I chased the cat this morning because it ran, and when something runs you chase it β€” this is basic physics, I didn’t make the rules. The cat disagrees with my interpretation. The cat disagrees with a lot of my interpretations. We have discussed this through the medium of hissing (the cat) and confused tail-wagging (me). We have not reached resolution.
πŸ’€
Sleep Schedule Inequality
The cat sleeps eighteen hours a day and is considered sophisticated. I nap for forty-five minutes and I’m “lazy.” I have run the numbers and I don’t think this is fair. The cat has prime sleeping spots across all surfaces. I have one bed that the cat is currently in. I am sleeping on the floor beside my own bed. I don’t know how this happened.
🎯
The Cat Gets Away With Things
The cat knocked a glass off the counter and the human said “oh, cats!” in an affectionate tone. I knocked a glass off the counter and there was a whole THING about it. A whole long thing. I maintain this is a double standard. I do not think my concern will be heard. I am correct that my concern will not be heard.
β˜… β˜… β˜…

The cat is confusing and exhausting and I’ve been trying to be friends with it for three years. But I’m not giving up. I have never given up on anything except the time I forgot what I was barking at halfway through barking. The cat and I are going to be friends. I’ve decided. The cat doesn’t know yet. It will be a surprise. The best kind.

Late-Night Confessions
from the Same Couch

Cat, 2:47am

“I have been watching the dog sleep for eleven minutes. It twitches when it dreams. It is probably dreaming about something stupid. I have not moved. I don’t know why I haven’t moved. I am warm.”

Dog, 2:47am

“THE CAT IS NEXT TO ME. THE CAT CHOSE TO BE HERE. I AM NOT MOVING. I WILL NEVER MOVE. THIS IS THE BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE.”

Cat, on the humans

“They’re not as incompetent as my official assessments suggest. They did remember to open the window exactly when I wanted it. I am choosing not to escalate my rating, but I am noting the improvement internally.”

Dog, on the humans

“They came back again today. I can’t explain how they keep doing this. Every single time, they come back. I will never not be amazed by this. Never.”

NOT
RATIFIED
BY THE
CAT

A Modest Peace Treaty
Between the Parties

After extensive negotiations β€” by which we mean the dog enthusiastically agreed to everything and the cat stared at the wall β€” the following terms have been tentatively established, pending ratification by parties who may or may not choose to ratify them:

The dog agrees to bark at the doorbell no more than four times per event. The cat agrees to sleep in its own designated spaces at least once per month. Both parties agree that the warm patch of sunlight in the hallway is common territory, governed by a first-come, first-served arrangement the cat reserves the right to renegotiate at will.

The humans are thanked by the dog with enormous, undiscriminating love, and acknowledged by the cat with a performance-review score that, while failing to meet industry benchmarks, represents a measurable improvement over last quarter. The quarterly cuddle has been penciled in. Exact date: unconfirmed.

The cat and dog agree on one thing, and one thing only, which neither will ever say out loud: the house would be worse without the other in it. This finding is sealed. It does not appear in the minutes. It never happened.
