Someone is kidnapping 5-year-old children.

Five-year-old Erin Hightower was abducted from a mall—and vanished without a trace until seven years later when Fetch saw her at a truck stop. Finding the missing girl is not Sonny’s job. But she was taken from her family—wherever she’s been, whatever happened to her, wasn’t her choice. And that’s wrong.
Recusing Erin may be Sonny’s cause, but it’s Katrina Hasting’s case, and the detective is haunted by this open, unsolved crime. Kat is a cop and plays by the rules, but Sonny knows there are no rules. And this is no simple kidnapping. Storm clouds are brewing, and as the rain falls in torrents, their quest for justice may cost them their lives.

This book was a very captivating story, and the writing was very reminiscent of William Diehl. The story follows a musician named Sonny Marshall, who hears about a girl gone missing while performing in San Francisco from his buddy, Fetch, who works for a CBS news station in San Francisco. The girl had been kidnapped in Sacramento seven years before, but Fetch sees her in Wyoming. Piqued by the mystery, Sonny goes on a nail-biting quest where the truth is not what it seems. In Sonny's pursuit of the truth, he finds himself in the company of Detective Kat Hasting, a woman haunted by the unsolved case that has cast a shadow over her career. Together, this unlikely duo embarks on a perilous journey into the depths of the kidnapping mystery, their contrasting approaches complementing each other as they navigate the treacherous path towards justice. Sonny's unwavering belief in redemption fuels his determination to bring Erin home, while Kat's unwavering commitment to the law guides her unwavering pursuit of justice. Their alliance, forged in the face of adversity, is a testament to the power of humanity amidst the darkness. This is a gripping mystery thriller that weaves suspense, redemption, and the enduring power of hope into a fantastic narrative. Sonny Marshall's unwavering moral compass and Kat Hasting's unwavering commitment to justice create a dynamic duo, their contrasting approaches complementing each other as they face a formidable adversary. I am a huge fan of thrillers and “Storm Warning” was no disappointment. It was one of those where you can’t (and don’t even want to) put it down, and that is how you know it is a good one! The main character, Sonny, is very likable to both fellow characters and readers. He is very passionate about injustice, even if it gets him into sticky situations. And the situation he finds himself in in “Storm Warning” is definitely a sticky one.
After one of his friends thinks he sees a girl at a gas station who was kidnapped seven years ago, Sonny is determined to find her, now knowing that she is still alive. Because law enforcement is hesitant about his information, Sonny takes it upon himself to figure out what happened to the missing girl, getting him into both violent and emotional trouble. After many twists and turns in the story line, we do end up finding out what happened to Erin Hightower…
The author has another book coming out in 2024, so I look forward to reading that as well!

All I can say is the author sure has a gift for storytelling, straight from the first chapter you are deep into the juicy mystery surrounding the novel. I appreciate that the author doesn't bog down the beginning of the book with drawn out descriptions of key characters and instead gives us enough to distinguish then builds upon each character profile. There is also a nice balance in the rendering of the setting, the author provides relevant history that ties into the plot and narrative and doesn't cloud the story with extra nonsense.
As a side note, the trans character Earl Zepeda being depicted in such an admirable light is also very refreshing. And as heartbreaking as his trauma regarding his sister and the attack on his family was to read, the added info on the main character’s childhood helps readers to understand his unquenchable thirst for justice; and therefore, this journey.
Crime, mystery, a search for answers and justice always makes for an engaging read. I believe true crime and cold case enthusiasts would enjoy this book.

The days of voraciously devouring Christopher Pike books are long behind me, and this book transported me back to that time period of my life, when I loved thrillers. For a while now, I have only been into the self-development genre. Honestly, since becoming a parent I have become sensitive to content involving the harming of children, so I was a little worried that this book would be "too much" for me. But I couldn't put it down, even if I did have to quickly skim over a part or two. :) It's wildly descriptive and intriguing.
Because of my sensitive nature, I appreciated how the actual details of the kidnapping were not disclosed at the beginning. You immediately know that it's the main idea the book is centered around, but because we don't get to know the girl or her family, it doesn't seem so terrifying (thank you, lol). The author does a great job of drawing you into the characters' personalities some of the wording is eclectic and thus, the opposite of boring.
Whether you're into thrillers or just want something outside of your usual reading comfort zone, this book is likely to lure you in and make you hang on tight 'til the end!

Terry R. Bacon is probably best known for his non-fiction titles focused on leadership and management. It is interesting to see an author in this field cross over so effortlessly into the realm of fiction! The book reads seamlessly, and it is clear that he is already a professional in this new genre.
This classic thriller details the investigation of a missing child. The main character Sonny Marshall is a jazz musician, but he is much more than that, as there are two sides to him, with clearly his love of justice being the most prominent. He is reminiscent of many a classic American hero, living a normal life on the one side, while saving lives, often beyond the law, on the other side.
The pacing of the story and the action sequences are absolutely superb, and the Kat and Sonny make for a loveable duo. Some creative choices as well I found personally enjoyable. I loved the inclusion of the Armenians!
If you enjoy a classic American crime thriller, you can do no better than this book.

I'm not usually one for thrillers, but was recommended Storm Warning and figured that I may as well see if I enjoy it. And boy did I ever. Be careful about when you pick this book up to read, because as soon as you start, you simply can't stop. I found Sonny Marshall to be an adorable (yet probably lethal) main character. I like his specific idiosyncrasies and liked even more that he reminds me of my dad. I enjoyed the pace of the story as well but more than anything I enjoyed Terry Bacon's writer's voice and the character-driven nature of the story. I love a character-driven story but they're hard for me to read when I don't like the main character; luckily, Bacon wrote an awesome main character.
The plot had plenty of twists and turns to keep a thriller-lover satiated, and also had a little love story for those of us who can't enjoy a book without one. The overall plot ended up being an unexpected one for me, but that didn't stop it from being incredibly intriguing. Kidnap stories often make me very uncomfortable, but I found the ending to be very satisfying, and I would certainly like to read more books from him.

This is my first time to read a Sonny Marshall thriller, but I doubt it will be my last. From the first pages, I was sucked in. A girl has gone missing, and, no, it’s not Sonny’s business – but he’s as attracted to a mystery as we all are. When a potential lead falls in his lap, what else is he to do but pursue it?
The story, of course, is compelling, and the writing is smooth. I found myself flipping through pages same as butter. What happened to Erin? How did she wind up in Wyoming? Or did she? Has she been dead all along? I made the mistake of starting the book one evening before bed and ended up staying awake long past the hour when I should have been snoozing. It never hurts sharing a name with a main character!
The pacing of the novel is terrific, and there are way more twists and turns than I anticipated. I would not be surprised if it gets picked up for a limited series on Netflix or somewhere similar. I want to spoil one big reveal so bad! I’m waiting for a friend to read it so that we can talk about it together. What I can tell you for sure is that I can't wait to dive into my next Sonny Marshall thriller!

This is the story of Sonny Marshall, a saxophone player with a desperate need to right the wrongs on the world. He is haunted by nightmares where he is unable to save a victim – be it from a fall, drowning, or whatever threatens them harm. It is this mindset that sends him on the search for a girl who went missing seven years prior. He joins forces with the detective who originally worked the missing girl’s case and continues to be haunted by her failure to bring the girl home.
Terry R. Bacon’s writing has echoes of Raymond Chandler and the private eye/detective stories that shaped the genre. From page one you can almost hear the rough, jaded voice of Sonny Marshall – a man who won’t tolerate injustice and, despite his better judgment, is drawn to solving mysteries that aren’t his business.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and can’t wait for the next Sonny Marshall thriller.

Haunted by a home invasion from his childhood, Sonny is driven to rescue young women who, in this case, have been kidnapped. But are things really as they seem? Why were these girls taken, and by whom?

This first time novelist grabs you from page one and you are dying to know who in the world is behind this. Sonny Marshall, a saxophonist in a local band, is fighting his own demons. He feels guilty because of an incident with his little sister. He could not protect her, therefore, he has an innate sense, a Knight in Shining Armor mentality. Sonny and his friend were hanging out at a local mall and witnessed a kidnapping. Erin went missing and no one knows where she is. What starts off as a pedifile case, turns into a bigger, darker, more sadistic eugenics project. Human Trafficking is such a prevalent topic right now and it is our job as conscious citizens to be aware.
Bacon develops his character and his setting so you feel you are living the exact scene at the exact time. In his search, Sonny learns of more children kidnapped in similar fashion and uncovers a vast conspiracy by a billionaire mastermind to create a future society of individuals identified as being brilliant. Sonny is helped by a beautiful detective, Kat, along with a cadre of bodyguard-type buddies and Harley-riding bikers. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Jazz Mystery, Measure by Measure
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2023
Sonny Marshall, professional saxophone player, math geek and Oxy consumer, lives and breathes jazz. He solves puzzles too, doggedly in this instance. A journalist friend with a visual memory spots a young girl in passing, calls her by name and minders seem to hustle her away. She has been missing for seven years, with no evident reason to be a target for kidnappers.
It turns out there are other girls, too. If there is a pattern, it’s elusive. Law enforcement in several jurisdictions may not have given up, but what they once knew is dated and the tracks are, putting it mildly, cold. Working from news reports, Sonny locates the cop from the original case, now a sergeant nicknamed Cat for Katrina. She doubts him. Thousands of kids go missing; how do you find one? His reply: “When you play music, you play one measure at a time. That’s what I’m going to do. One measure at a time until I hear the melody. If I can discover the melody, I can find the girl.” With that, Cat is willing to follow him off the radar and the chase is on … until the evil comes to them.
If the adage is true —that you should write about things you know — author Terry Bacon probably is a savant.
In Storm Warning, readers are presented with a playlist of great jazz pieces sprinkled throughout the narrative. And invited to learn some moves of Aikido and Krav Maga, martial art extensions of judo and karate. And to appreciate gangster cults, classic motorcycles, how states issue auto licenses, applied eugenics. All in prose so graceful it approaches word painting. Except during fight scenes when the words leverage into hammer blows and gut punches.
This is a cinematic first novel. We gotta hope Sonny is just beginning.
