Yesterday, ABC cancelled the rebooted Roseanne Barr Show after its star tweeted “Muslim Brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby = vj,” referring to Valerie Jarrett, former Senior Advisor to President Obama. Jarrett is an African-American who was born in Iran to American parents but has no known to be Muslim or have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. After cancelling her show, ABC’s President Channing Dungey said, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” Although she apologized for the tweet yesterday, this morning Barr is blaming her racist tweet on Ambien and her support for President Donald Trump. She is known for making controversial statements and for supporting conspiracy theories, but comparing an African-American woman to an ape was over the top for ABC, many of her co-stars on the show, and most people around the country. Barr’s talent agency, ICM Partners, dropped her as a client, and a number of networks that had been running Roseanne Barr Show reruns dropped them. Thus far, Trump has been silent on the cancellation of her show, but just months ago when the rebooted Roseanne Barr Show came on the air he was at a rally and gloated about the 18 million viewers who’d watched the show. A preening Trump declared, “And the show was about us!” Yes, Donald, with all the racism and bigotry of its star and with her penchant for baseless conspiracy theories, it was about you. It was all about you.
